A coat is the piece people see first and most often, so it should feel like you. Our coats and jackets cover the whole cold season: tailored coats with a single or double breast, belted cape coats, longline coats that fall to the knee, and lighter faux-leather and faux-suede trenches for the months in between. Choosing coats by length, warmth and what goes underneath

Length first: a knee-length or longline coat is the warmest and looks most elegant over dresses and midi skirts; a hip-length jacket or belted trench is lighter and better for driving, cycling and layering over trousers. Then consider what you will wear under it. Relaxed and double-breasted coats are cut with room for a knit; slim single-breasted coats sit best over a blouse or fine jumper. Sizes run from XS to XXL depending on the style, and each product page shows the fit status. A brushed coat keeps its shape when hung properly and aired rather than washed often; the material block on each product page lists the composition; see the Fabric care guide. Frequently asked questions

Should I size up in a coat to wear a jumper underneath?

Not usually. Our relaxed and double-breasted coats are already cut with layering room. Only size up for slim single-breasted styles if your shoulder measurement is at the top of the size, or if you plan to wear chunky knits daily. Check shoulder width and bust in the centimetre chart.

What is the difference between a cape coat and a regular coat?

A cape coat has no fitted sleeves: the fabric falls from the shoulder over the arms, often with armholes or a belt to shape it. It is dramatic, very comfortable over thick knits and ideal when you move your arms a lot. A regular coat offers more wind protection at the wrist.

Is a faux-leather trench warm enough for winter?

A faux-leather or faux-suede trench is a transitional jacket for autumn and spring: it blocks wind and light rain but has no insulation. For winter, wear it over a turtleneck jumper and add a scarf, or choose a longline, double-breasted coat for the coldest weeks.

How do I keep a coat looking new?

Hang it on a wide, shaped hanger, brush it with a clothes brush after wearing and air it outside rather than washing. Remove pills with a knit comb and treat small stains locally with a damp cloth. Have it cleaned professionally once a season, and store it in a breathable garment bag over summer.
