Choosing cardigans and jumpers that layer well

Consider weight and length together. A loose, chunky cable-knit cardigan is a coat substitute on mild days and looks best over slim or straight trousers. A finer button cardigan behaves like a jumper and can be tucked or belted. Turtleneck jumpers in a relaxed, slightly oversized cut are made to sit over the hip; if you prefer a closer fit, choose a ribbed high-neck. Frequently asked questions

How should an oversized jumper fit without looking shapeless?

Volume on top needs a narrower line below: pair a relaxed turtleneck with straight or slim trousers, or tuck the front into a high-waist skirt. The shoulder seam may sit slightly off the shoulder by design, but the sleeves should not cover your hands. If two sizes fit, choose the smaller one.

Cardigan or jumper: which is more versatile?

A cardigan, because it works three ways: open over a dress or blouse, buttoned as a top, or belted as a light jacket. A jumper is the warmer single layer and the better choice for very cold days. Most wardrobes benefit from one fine cardigan and one chunkier knit.

Why does my knit pill and is it a defect?

Pilling appears where fabric rubs – under the arms, at the sides, under a bag strap. It is normal for soft knits and not a fault. A knit comb or fabric shaver removes the pills in minutes. Washing cold, inside out and drying flat slows it down considerably.

What does one size mean for a cardigan?

One-size cardigans are cut loose and open-front, so the width is forgiving across several sizes. Check the sleeve length and total length in the centimetre chart on the product page: those two measurements decide whether the cardigan will sit where you want it.
