Choosing tops that layer and last

Think in two groups. The first is the base layer: a crew-neck or round-neck tee in white, black or a neutral that sits smoothly under a blazer or cardigan and can be tucked. The second is the finished top that stands on its own – a peplum top that marks the waist, a high-neck top with lace detail, a colour-block long sleeve. For cold months, a brushed or fleece-lined long-sleeve top adds warmth with no bulk under a coat. Loose-fit tees look best half-tucked into a high waist. Sizes run from S to 3XL depending on the style; check the fit status and the centimetre chart, and use the Size guide if you are between sizes. Should a basic T-shirt be fitted or loose?

For layering under a blazer or cardigan, a fitted or regular crew neck sits smoothest. Worn on its own, a loose-fit tee half-tucked into high-waist trousers looks relaxed and intentional. Many wardrobes benefit from one of each in white and one in a darker neutral.

What is a fleece-lined base layer and when do I wear it?

A fleece-lined long-sleeve top has a soft brushed inside that traps warmth while staying thin. Wear it under a knit or coat on cold days, or on its own at home. It replaces a thermal vest and looks like a normal long-sleeve top from the outside.

How do I keep white tops white?

Wash whites separately at a moderate temperature, use an oxygen-based whitener rather than chlorine bleach, and dry them in daylight when possible. Treat deodorant marks before washing with a little diluted detergent. Avoid overloading the machine so the fabric rinses properly.

Which neckline suits me best?

A V-neck or layered V lengthens the neck and suits fuller busts. A crew or round neck balances narrow shoulders and is the classic choice under a blazer. A high neck or stand collar looks elegant with earrings and works well under an open cardigan or coat.
