Choosing a yoga bolster: how to find the right meditation cushion

Team Lumasana · Last verified on 1 August 2026

In short: A yoga bolster is a firm, long cushion that supports your body in lying and seated poses. Choose the shape by use: round for deep support in yin and restorative yoga, flatter for meditation and breathwork. Look for a firm filling and a removable cover.

What exactly is a yoga bolster?

Unlike an ordinary cushion, a bolster is firmly filled — it carries your weight without sinking. That lets your body truly let go: your muscles have nothing to hold. Bolsters are used mainly in yin yoga, restorative yoga, pregnancy yoga and meditation. Have a look at our bolsters and cushions for the shapes we stock.

Shape, filling and size

  • Round: the classic shape — maximum height and support under knees, back or belly.
  • Rectangular/flat: more stable and lower; lovely under the pelvis for meditation and breathing exercises.
  • Filling: buckwheat hulls mould to your body and stay firm; kapok is lighter and softer.
  • Cover: always choose a removable, washable cover — you don’t wash the bolster itself.

The yoga bolster in practice: three ways

Place the bolster lengthways under your back for a gentle chest opener, crossways under your knees to release your lower back, or sit on it cross-legged — with your pelvis slightly raised, sitting for longer suddenly becomes comfortable. Pair the bolster with a meditation cushion and you have the right support for every calm practice. A yoga bolster is the difference between “holding a pose” and truly sinking into it.

Frequently asked questions about bolsters

What's the difference between a bolster and an ordinary cushion?

A bolster is far more firmly filled and doesn't sink — it carries your body weight. A pillow gives way and so offers no stable support.

Which yoga bolster is good for beginners?

A round bolster with a firm filling is the most versatile: usable in yin, restorative yoga and as a seat riser. It lets you discover what your practice needs.

Can I wash a yoga bolster?

The cover, yes (unzip it and follow the care label); the filling, no. Air the bolster now and then, unrolled, in a dry room.

Do I need a bolster for meditation?

Not strictly — but sitting with a slightly raised pelvis (bolster or meditation cushion) keeps your back effortlessly upright and makes longer sits far more comfortable.
